CUMBERLAND - Singing, hip-hop
dancing and praying are among the many activities that are about to
begin at the newly opened Souls Won Outreach Ministries in South
Cumberland. "It's a tremendous thing for our community," Mayor
Lee Fielder said following Sunday's ribbon-cutting ceremony. "It's
a tremendous outreach for so many people and it's really good for
Cumberland."
The ministry, located at 12 West Industrial Blvd. near the intersection
of Virginia Avenue, will focus on providing positive choices for area
youth, said Pastor Shannon Watkins who, along with her husband Pastor
Kenneth Watkins, founded the outreach.
"We want to give back and bring people together," Kenneth
Watkins said of his non-denominational, multi-racial ministry. The
Watkins founded Souls Won Ministries, a local gospel recording and
singing group, in 1996 and have ministered at a variety of festivals,
conferences and college and church events.
"The greatest thing is just the fact that they bring something
different to the table that will touch the teen-agers," Pastor
Matthew Ellis of the City of Refuge in Cumberland said of the Watkins.
"Teen-agers won't have to be like them - they'll be like the
teen-agers."
Ellis said the outreach will be attractive to people who may not be
interested in attending a traditional church.
"It's just an awesome thing
for so many people," said Joseph Harris who traveled to the
ribbon-cutting ceremony from Washington with his wife Jeanette who sings
with the Watkins and has a music video that is played on the BET
channel.
A food and clothing bank may also be established at the outreach, said
Kenneth Watkins.
"This neighborhood just needs many groups working together to bring
a spirit of renewal to this neighborhood," said Michael Mudge of
the Virginia Avenue Betterment Committee.
Services will be held at the outreach on Sept. 25 and Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.
and at 11 a.m. each Sunday beginning on Oct. 9. For more information,
